Taiwan + associated islands; Kinmen, Matsu, the Pratas and Itu Aba (Republic of China) - The 'Republic of China' used to govern most of mainland China, and Mongolia too, but after the Communist Party won the civil war in 1949, the government retreated to the island of Taiwan. Many of Taiwan's leaders have referred to it as being the true ruler of China, and they still claim sovereignty over China and Mongolia, but the People's Republic of China still harbours wishes to reunite Taiwan with the mainland, by force if necessary. 23 nations currently recognise Taiwan.
